Ergotherapie beruht auf medizinischer und sozialwissenschaftlicher Grundlage und ist ein ärztlich zu verordnendes Heilmittel.

Ergotherapie kann bei Menschen jeden Alters mit motorisch-funktionellen, sensomotorisch-perzeptiven, neuropsychologischen oder psychosozialen Störungen angewendet werden.

Ziel der Ergotherapie ist es, individuelle Handlungskompetenzen im täglichen Leben und in Schule und Beruf zu entwickeln, wiederzuerlangen und / oder zu erhalten. Es soll den betroffenen Menschen geholfen werden, eine durch Entwicklungsstörung, Krankheit, Verletzung oder Behinderung verloren gegangene bzw. noch nicht vorhandene Handlungsfähigkeit im Alltag zu erlernen bzw. wiederzuerlangen. Dem Patienten soll dadurch eine weitgehende Selbständigkeit ermöglicht werden.

Die Methode der Ergotherapie ist der spezifische Einsatz ausgewählter Aktivitäten, um Auswirkungen von Krankheit und Behinderung zu analysieren und zu behandeln. Der Ergotherapeut berät den Betroffenen, seine Angehörigen und Bezugspersonen zum Umgang mit der Beeinträchtigung und klärt Fragen zur häuslichen, schulischen oder beruflichen Wiedereingliederung.
